How the Loon lost her Voice - By Anne Cameron
"Sing, dear Loon," the Mole begged. "Please sing a song of happiness for us all." But when Loon opened her mouth to sing, they all realized what a terrible price she had paid in her attempt to free the daylight. "Oh, dear," said Mole, and a tear slid down her face. "Don't cry, Mole," Loon said bravely. "Perhaps my singing voice is gone, but it was worth it to bring back this warm sunshine. I don't mind." As Loon said these words, there was sadness in her voice and a lump in her throat. "I really don't mind at all. It was worth it." You'll enjoy Anne Cameron's wonderful rendition of a Native American legend and there are also great illustrations by Tara Miller.
